Supply Information:
For classes after September 2009, please look at the All Class Descriptions page for the supply lists. I'm trying to consolidate all of this information onto one page.
You must buy supplies at the store where the class will be held;
class descriptions/supply lists will itemize supplies to be brought
from home. Supplies and tools previously purchased at the store
can (and should) be used for other classes. Prices below, if given,
are approximate, call the store where the class will be held for
exact pricing of supplies and tools.
Standard Tools/Supplies
There are several tools and supplies that you will use in many
different classes that, if you do not already own, you should
research and purchase:
• Flat nose pliers (~$10-20)
• Chain nose pliers (~$10-20)
• Round nose pliers (~$10-20)
• Wire cutters (~$10-20)
• Polishing cloth (~$5-$7)
• Chasing hammer (~$12)
• Chasing block/Anvil (~$12)
There are other tools that may not be required for classes, but
are useful and are worth consideration when buying new tools:
• Jeweler's saw with 2/0 blades (~$30) - an intermediate
tool, but useful in countless ways (and will save you lots of money in the end)
• A Dremel or flex-shaft system (from $60 up) - Great for more than you can imagine. I use mine every day I make jewelry and love it.
• Nylon jaw pliers (~$15)
- for straightening wire or thin metal sheets
• Hole Wizard (~$35) - for
easily punching holes in sheet metal (if you don't have a Dremel
or don't like using drills, or want portability)
Worth keeping on hand, the most commonly used supplies - both
for the construction of jewelery and for embelishing
and finishing jewelry in (non-seed beading) classes are:
• A small selection of focal beads
• A selection of assorted
4mm beads or chips for spacers
• A selection of 6-10mm beads for earrings or accent beads
• A selection of 4-6mm metal spacers
• Headpins (1.5" - 2", 24 - 22g)
• 2mm crimp beads and crimping pliers
• SoftFlex (or other stringing wire) and SoftFlex cutters
• Neck wires/cords/chain
• Clasps
• 20g wire - for loop and
wrap, small jump rings (I consider this the most essential wire
gauge)
• 18g wire - for standard
jump rings
• 16g wire - for clasps, rivets
(cold connections), large jump rings
• 22g half hard sterling silver
wire - for earwires, wire wrapping
• 28g wire - for making French Wire (or Viking Knit)
If you are buying sterling silver wire, I recommend buying dead
soft unless an instructor specifically lists something else (like
half hard or hard). Dead soft is the most workable so requires
less annealing (a heat treatment to soften work-hardened metal)
and, since all silver hardens as you work with it (or chase it),
it can quickly and easily be made harder. In my classes, 22g sterling
silver (for ear wires) is the only wire I ever ask students to
buy in half hard (because it's stiff and springy characteristics
are perfect for earwires) - all other sterling wire I ask students
to use should be dead soft.

•Bottle Cap Art: Doming and Riveting
Whether or not you've taken Julie's (It's) Riveting class, this
morning class is a great way to learn or practice your cold-connection
skills and learn about doming. We'll be creating a really fun
pendant by reusing bottle caps (start saving them!) - creating
a dome in the center of two caps, then riveting them together.
Both of these skills will allow you to create the advanced project
option offered in the afternoon class.

- 3' 28g (~$0.50/ft S.S.)
- 6' 24g

• 2 - 2mm sterling silver
crimps
• 40-50 semi-precious
stones/chips
• 3/64" mandrel
• 1/16" mandrel
• 1/4" mandrel
• Round nose pliers
• Chain nose pliers
• Crimping pliers
• Wire cutter
Note on the semi-precious stones/chips:
If you have a selection of stones from home, feel free to
bring those.
Note on the mandrels: The smaller two are
mandrel sizes used in lampworking. A length of 18 or 16g
hard wire may be substituted for the smallest mandrel. A
crochet hook or knitting needle with a 2mm shaft can be
substituted for the 1/16" mandrel. A crochet hook or
knitting needle with a 6.26mm shaft can be substituted for
the 1/4" mandrel. A 1/4" wood dowel will also
work instead of a metal mandrel, but when wrapping wire
onto smaller diameter dowels, it can often be difficult
to remove the coil.

Supplies and tools for the beginning
soldering classes include:
• Sterling Silver (~$3/ft
for 20g wire and $6/ft for 16g wire)
• Torch kit ($25 - $35
depending on the torch size)
• Butane (~$4 per bottle)
• Flux (~$5 per bottle)
• Easy solder (~$5 per
1"x2" sheet)
• Pearl Tweezers (~$7)
• Firing Surface (~$15
for charcoal or $17 for ceramic)
• Polishing Cloth (~$6)
Once you buy the non-silver supplies for one soldering class,
you won't need to buy anything additional for future classes,
unless you run out of solder, butane, or flux.
Note on the torches: While the small torch works best for
the small joints of the beginning classes, the large torch
is recommended for most intermediate classes and required
for the advanced classes. You will have an opportunity to use both in the beginning classes, to help you decide which you prefer. Many students eventually invest
in both.
From home please bring:
• Set of jeweler's files (I highly recommend this set by Grobet)
• Small wire brush (Hardware store Plumbing section, ~$1)
Sticks & Stones provides use of pliers,
dowels, Sparex pickle, chasing hammer and block, and Dremel
polishing equipment in class. Pliers, dowels, (optional)
chasing equipment, and Sparex are available to purchase
for home use. Pliers are ~$10 ea (depending on the type
and quality), dowels are available for ~$1ea, the chasing
hammer is ~$12, the chasing block is ~$12, and Sparex pickle
for ~$5/pint of solution (dry, add 2c water). |

Supplies for the Crazy Wire Rings class include:
•18 gauge sterling silver wire
•22 gauge sterling silver wire
•Ring mandrel or finger-sized
dowels (2/3" or 17mm for size 7)
•Round-nose pliers
•Flat-nose pliers
•Chain-nose pliers
•Decorative beads (hole must be at least 1mm)
•Bead reamer (optional)
Note on the mandrel/dowels: Ideally, the ring mandrel should be perfectly smooth and metal so that you can easily shape the ring. If you have a dowel (or anything round of the right size), the size does not need to be perfect since it's primarily to shape the ring. You can adjust the size slightly before wrapping the wire.
Note on the beads: The hole must be at least 1mm because that's the diameter of 18g wire. You can check the holes simply by carring a length of 18g wire and seeing if the bead fits.
Note on the pliers: It's always a good idea
to have a set of your own good pliers, but Sticks & Stones
has pliers available for your use in store. The Bead Gallery
also has a few extra pliers available. |
